Yioryios Papayioryiou
M5 Public Art Commission

Congratulations to Yioryios Papayioryiou who was recently awarded a major public art commission as part of the WestConnex Canal to Creek M5 Public Art Program!

Launching in 2020, Canal to Creek is a diverse program of eighteen commissioned artworks that will help activate new and existing parklands between St Peters and Beverly Hills; including contemporary sculpture, artist-designed playgrounds, a writers walk, large-scale murals and immersive lighting installations.

Yioryios’ steel sculpture will be 3 metres high, 6 metres wide, and will be located in a permanent contemporary sculpture park in St Peters.

The artwork will present the viewer with an encounter of movement through time, space and light. Gradually revealing its hidden colours, line and morphing negative spaces, the sculpture will constantly transform itself in front of the viewer, in much the same way that the city’s architectural landscape is constantly in flux.

Yioryios’ sculpture will be unveiled in 2020. For now, here is a sneak peek at the artist’s maquette, which gives an idea of what the final public artwork will look like.
