Eugenia Lim
The People's Currency

Presented by 4a Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Eugenia Lim will present The People’s Currency as part of Asia TOPA at Federation Square in Melbourne from 14-19 February.

The work takes its name from renminbi (China’s currency) and explores the social impacts of globalisation on those who seek their fortunes in the factories of China – or the ‘workshop of the world’. Dressed as a gold Mao-suited ‘ambassador’, Lim will inhabit a factory printing currency of her own design and invite the public to enter into short-term ‘employment’ on the factory floor.

The People’s Currency performances invite public participation and are free of charge. On Friday 17 February from 12.30PM – 1.30PM, Eugenia Lim will join Flying Buck Exchange artist Abdullah M. I. Syed and ANZ Senior Strategy Manager, Rowan Earle, for a discussion on The Currency Exchange at MPavilon’s MTalks session.

The People’s Currency is presented with support from Federation Square and the City of Melbourne through the Arts Grants Program, and is presented as part of Asia TOPA 2017.
