Congratulations to Claudia Nicholson who was recently invited to participate in the inaugural presentation of The National: New Australian Art. Commissioned to create a new work for this biennial exhibition, Claudia is currently exhibiting a large scale installation All I have are dreams of you at Carriageworks.
The National 2017: New Australian Art presents the latest ideas and forms in contemporary Australian art, curated across three of Sydney’s premier cultural institutions: the Art Gallery of NSW, Carriageworks and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. A six-year initiative over three editions in 2017, 2019 and 2021, the curatorial vision for the exhibition represents a mix of emerging, mid-career and established artists drawn from around the country and Australian artists practicing overseas. New and commissioned works encompass a diverse range of mediums including painting, video, sculpture, installation, drawing and performance.
Colombian-born artist Claudia Nicholson was adopted and raised in Sydney. In her work for The National she continues her expression of her Latin American roots, paying tribute to the late Tejano musician Selena Quintanilla through the creation of a large scale ‘alfombra de aserrín’ (traditional South American sawdust carpet), created painstakingly over several days using sawdust, glitter and pigment.
Claudia’s work can be seen at Carriageworks until 16 July, 2017.
